The Yunnan Nationalities Village
About This Experience
The Yunnan Nationalities Village is an open-air cultural park on the shores of Dian Lake in Kunming. It showcases the traditions, architecture, and customs of 25 of Yunnan's 26 officially recognised ethnic minority groups. Each village section features authentic traditional buildings, cultural displays, and live performances.
What to Expect
Walking through the park, you'll move between distinct village areas — from the Bai people's courtyard houses to Dai bamboo stilt dwellings and Yi log cabins. Traditional dance and music performances take place throughout the day. Artisans demonstrate traditional crafts including batik dyeing, weaving, and pottery. The lakeside setting adds a pleasant backdrop to the experience.
Practical Tips
- Allow at least three to four hours to explore the park properly
- Check the daily performance schedule at the entrance to plan your route
- The park is large — comfortable walking shoes are recommended
- Local snacks and ethnic cuisine are available at food stalls throughout the village
