The Western Mountains of Kunming
About This Experience
The Western Mountains (Xi Shan), also known as the Western Hills, rise along the western shore of Dian Lake about 15 kilometres from Kunming's centre. The forested slopes are dotted with ancient temples, pavilions, and the remarkable Dragon Gate — a series of grottoes, sculptures, and tunnels carved directly into the cliff face during the Qing Dynasty.
What to Expect
The ascent takes you through dense forest past several temple complexes, including Huating Temple and Taihua Temple, two of Yunnan's largest Buddhist monasteries. The highlight is the Dragon Gate (Longmen), a narrow passage carved into the sheer cliff face at 2,300 metres. The views from here across Dian Lake and the Kunming basin are spectacular. A cable car is available for part of the journey.
Practical Tips
- Take the cable car up and walk down, or vice versa, to save energy
- The Dragon Gate section involves narrow paths along cliff faces — not ideal for those with vertigo
- Wear sturdy shoes for the stone steps and forest trails
- Clear mornings offer the best views across Dian Lake
- Bus routes from the city centre connect to the base of the hills
