About This Experience

The Golden Temple (Jin Dian) is the largest copper temple in China, perched on Mingfeng Hill about 7 kilometres northeast of Kunming's centre. Originally built in 1602 during the Ming Dynasty, the temple is cast entirely from bronze, giving it a distinctive golden sheen that glows in the sunlight.

What to Expect

The park surrounding the temple is a tranquil escape of camellia gardens, ancient cypress trees, and winding stone paths. The main hall sits at the summit, offering views across the forested hills. Inside, intricate bronze work and Taoist artefacts reflect centuries of craftsmanship. In spring, the camellia gardens burst into colour with thousands of blooms.

Practical Tips

  • Visit in spring (February–March) for the camellia flower season
  • The park is hillside — wear comfortable walking shoes
  • Bus routes from the city centre make access easy
  • Allow two to three hours for a relaxed visit including the gardens
