We planned a day trip to Kuranda, better known as the Village in the Rainforest. The best way to get up there was to board the Kuranda Scenic Railway. We drove our way to the Skyrail along the dramatic Captain Cook Highway.
We left our campervan in the car park. A shuttle bus collected us and drove us to the Freshwater Station. We would later come back via the Skyrail cable car to pick up our vehicle.
The award-winning rail journey meandered its way from the bottom railway station through the world heritage listed rainforest of the Barron Gorge National Park to the montage village of Kuranda.
We cruised through a breathtaking scenery framed by rugged montages, towering waterfalls, deep ravines, 16 handmade tunnels and 37 bridges. At the Barron Falls Station, we disembarked the historic train to explore the rainforest mid-station.
An hour and a half, and 37 kilometres later, we arrived at the small yet vibrant Kuranda community. The friendly atmosphere of the village with its craft boutiques, markets and wildlife refuges made a great place to spend a few hours. We skipped the animals sanctuaries and strolled along the main streets.
When we had enough of shopping and full with German sausages - Australian food can be expensive, we hopped into the cable car. We glided just metres over the canopy of Australia’s World Heritage listed Tropical Rainforests as we made our way back to the car park. After a short drive to Port Douglas, we settled in the charming town for another night in our campervan.
