We went down to the Alappuzha Beach and found hundreds of crabs scurrying around the sandy beach, hiding and crawling away as we approached. A massive highway was under construction near the shore making the local area unattractive. We didn't stay much longer.
Furthermore, we had a job to do. Alleppey, also known as Alappuzha, is worldwide famous for its backwaters and we couldn't wait to book the perfect houseboat. We headed to the docks along the canal trying to find a good deal for what is quintessential of the Kerala experience. Many houseboats were nestled close, side by side and one behind the other.
We spent some time choosing a houseboat in Alleppey. Kerala houseboat tariff range from 6000 IDR for a single bedroom houseboat to a whopping 30,000 IDR for a luxury 8 bedrooms boat. We realised that all offers were very similar. Just the boats were different. Starting around 12 noon, the embarkations will circle the lakes and canals until 17h. The floating hotel will be harboured for dinner and also for the night. In the morning a quick journey will bring you back in town. Conscious of the environmental impact the boats, we elected a more eco-friendly experience. Check out our next diary to know more...
We jumped in an auto rickshaw to explore the Marari Beach, 11 km from Alappuzha. The coast seemed undeveloped and a bit of a secret. A perfect spot to unwind. Our driver was lovely and waited to bring us back to the hotel. But not before enjoying the sunset and feasting in a tiny restaurant by the beach. Their seafood was to die. Best way ever to conclude a busy day.
