We packed our bags and set out towards Hampi located on the ruins of the capital of the former Vijayanagara Empire, and home to the esteemed Virupaksha temple, one of the holiest and most sacred sanctuaries in all of India.
We boarded the 7:10 Amaravati Express from Vasco da Gama Station to Hospet Junction. The train was empty until we reached Madgaon where most people boarded. Vendors selling snacks and chai, tourists trying to find their seats and the staff performing their duties created a massive confusion in the aisle. We observed serenely from the conform of our berths. It normally takes 9 hours to complete the 341 kilometres. We arrived late but not by much.
The station was only 13 kilometres away from Hampi in the state of Karnataka. We were greeted by a tuk-tuk sent by our guesthouse, the Gopi guest house. It's always a good feeling when someone is waiting for you with your name written on a board.
The terrace restaurant offered a good view of the nearest ruins backdrop by rocky hillocks. We enjoyed as much the food than our first sunset in Hampi.
We strolled along the ruins and went to register at the local police station. Few tourists seemed to care about the procedure but it was funny to see the inside of the premise. We still got to answer many questions... about Belgium!
Where to stay in Hampi?
In Hampi, you can find affordable accommodation either in Hampi Bazaar or across the river in one of the many resorts/farms which offer a more chilled out ambience with amazing views over the rice fields and the river.
We elected to sleep in the heart of the Hampi Bazaar. It's close to the main temples and we were not relying on the boats to cross the river. At sunset, the boats stop and a very expensive drive might be the only option to reach the other side.
A decent and cheap option is Gopi Guest House but remember, no meat or alcohol is served on that side of the river and don't expect luxury like air conditioner, bath tube or strong WIFI. In return you will get a good bed, hot shower, very affordable vegetarian food and a rooftop terrace offering a stunning panoramic view. We book through booking and got a complimentary free breakfast and a free pick up from the train station.
