About This Experience

The Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary sits in the heart of Ubud, sheltering over 1,200 long-tailed macaques across 12.5 hectares of dense tropical forest. The sanctuary is also home to three Hindu temples dating back to the 14th century, their stone carvings now wrapped in moss and the tangled roots of enormous banyan trees.

What to Expect

Walking through the forest, you'll encounter monkeys everywhere — swinging from branches, grooming each other on temple walls, and occasionally approaching visitors. The shaded pathways wind past carved stone statues, a ravine with a stream, and moss-covered bridges. The atmosphere is both playful and sacred.

Practical Tips

  • Do not bring food or open bags — monkeys will grab anything they can
  • Remove sunglasses and loose accessories before entering
  • Keep a respectful distance from the monkeys and avoid direct eye contact
  • The sanctuary is in central Ubud, walkable from most accommodations
  • Visit early morning or late afternoon for fewer crowds
