About This Experience

The Big Wild Goose Pagoda (Da Yan Ta) is one of Xi'an's most recognisable landmarks. Built in 652 AD during the Tang Dynasty, the 64-metre pagoda was constructed to house Buddhist scriptures and figurines brought back from India by the monk Xuanzang. It stands within the grounds of Da Ci'en Temple, a serene complex in the south of the city.

What to Expect

The pagoda's seven storeys can be climbed via an internal staircase, with each level offering wider views across Xi'an. The surrounding temple grounds are peaceful, with incense smoke drifting between ancient halls. In the evening, the nearby North Square hosts Asia's largest musical fountain show — a spectacular display of water, light, and music against the illuminated pagoda.

Practical Tips

  • Climb to the top for panoramic views of the city
  • Time your visit for the evening fountain show at the North Square
  • The temple grounds require a separate entrance fee from the pagoda climb
  • The surrounding area has good restaurants and shops for a post-visit stroll
