We were leaving Bangkok for Southern Thailand - a distinct region connected to central Thailand by the narrow Kra Isthmus. We took a Grab taxi to the airport, caught a flight, then transferred to a minivan to reach Krabi by day's end.

The Journey South

A full day of transport isn't always exciting, but we've learned to appreciate those moments for catching up on blog work and writing content for you, our wonderful readers! The journey from Bangkok's urban chaos to Krabi's beaches was worth every hour.

Arriving in Ao Nang

Our hotel, Kokotel Krabi Ao Nang, was located just steps from the main strip of shops and vendors. With only a short walk to the beach, we were incredibly excited to call this home for the next 3 days.

Evening Beach Stroll

We strolled along the sandy beach of Ao Nang, though we couldn't see much detail as night had already fallen. The sound of waves, warm tropical air, and the silhouettes of famous limestone karsts in the distance promised amazing exploration ahead.

We stopped for a quick, light dinner and called it a day. Tomorrow would be busy exploring the stunning surroundings of Krabi - including the famous Railay Beach!

Traveling Bangkok to Krabi

  • Total travel time: 4-5 hours door-to-door including airport transfers and waiting. Start early to arrive before dark and enjoy first evening!
  • Ao Nang Beach: Main tourist area in Krabi. Great base for exploring Railay, Phi Phi, island hopping. Walking street with restaurants, bars, massage shops, tour agencies.
  • Accommodation in Ao Nang: Huge range from budget hostels ($8-15) to luxury resorts ($100-300+). Book ahead in high season (Nov-Apr). Kokotel offers good value!
  • Budget (2017): Domestic flight 500-1,500 THB, minivan 150-200 THB, mid-range hotel 800-1,500 THB/night. Ao Nang slightly pricier than other Krabi areas.
  • Alternative: Bangkok to Krabi by bus (12-14 hours, 600-900 THB). Cheaper but exhausting. Overnight bus arrives early morning. Flight recommended for comfort!
  • Ao Nang vs Krabi Town: Ao Nang = beaches, tourists, more expensive. Krabi Town = local, cheaper, but 30min from beaches. Choose based on priorities!

Note:

After a full day of travel, arriving in Krabi felt like stepping into a completely different Thailand - trading Bangkok's skyscrapers for limestone karsts and city streets for pristine beaches. Tomorrow we'd discover why Krabi is one of Thailand's most beloved destinations!
