About This Experience

Thung Nham Bird Garden lies in the Ninh Binh province, a short distance from the famous Tam Coc boat rides. Set in a valley surrounded by dramatic limestone karsts, the garden is home to thousands of birds — including storks, herons, and cormorants — that return each evening to roost in the trees. The surrounding area also features caves, a lotus pond, and dense tropical vegetation.

What to Expect

A boat ride through the valley takes you past towering karst formations and into the heart of the bird sanctuary. In the late afternoon, the sky fills with flocks returning to their nests — a spectacular sight against the backdrop of the limestone cliffs. Walking paths lead through caves and along the edge of the forest, where you can observe the birds at closer range.

Practical Tips

  • Late afternoon (4–5pm) is the best time to see the birds returning to roost
  • The boat ride through the valley lasts approximately 30 minutes
  • Combine with a visit to Tam Coc or Trang An for a full day in Ninh Binh
  • Bring binoculars for birdwatching from the observation points
  • The site is about 12 kilometres from Tam Coc — accessible by motorbike or taxi
