About This Experience

Kaikoura is one of the best places in the world to observe marine mammals in their natural habitat. The deep underwater canyon just off the coast creates a nutrient-rich environment that attracts sperm whales year-round, along with dusky dolphins, fur seals, and a remarkable diversity of seabirds.

What to Expect

The boat heads out from Kaikoura's small harbour, with the snow-capped Seaward Kaikoura Range providing a dramatic backdrop. Using hydrophones to listen for whale clicks, the crew locates sperm whales resting at the surface between their deep dives. When a whale lifts its tail fluke before diving, it's a moment you won't forget.

Practical Tips

  • Book well in advance, especially during summer (December–February)
  • Tours may be cancelled in rough weather — keep a flexible schedule
  • Bring layers, it's cold on the water even in summer
  • Motion sickness tablets are recommended for those who are sensitive
  • Dolphins and albatrosses are almost guaranteed even if whales prove elusive
