Wai-O-Tapu Le Pays Magique Thermal
About This Experience
Wai-O-Tapu, meaning "Sacred Waters" in Maori, is New Zealand's most colourful and diverse geothermal attraction. Located just south of Rotorua in the Taupo Volcanic Zone, this otherworldly landscape features collapsed craters, natural hot springs, and mineral terraces painted in vivid greens, oranges, and yellows by centuries of mineral deposits.
What to Expect
The self-guided walking trail loops through the park's highlights. The Champagne Pool is the star — a 65-metre-wide hot spring with striking orange and green mineral deposits along its edges. The Devil's Bath glows an eerie green, while the mud pools bubble and pop hypnotically. Time your visit for 10:15 am to see the Lady Knox Geyser erupt.
Practical Tips
- About 30 minutes south of Rotorua, or 3 hours from Auckland
- Allow 1.5–2 hours for the full walking trail
- The Lady Knox Geyser erupts daily at 10:15 am — arrive early for a good spot
- Stay on marked paths — the ground can be unstable and extremely hot
- The sulphur smell is strong — you'll get used to it
