About This Experience

The ruins of Palenque sit on a series of hills overlooking the Chiapas lowlands, enveloped by dense tropical jungle. This UNESCO World Heritage site was one of the most powerful Maya city-states between the 5th and 8th centuries. The site is renowned for the quality of its sculpture, the elegance of its architecture, and the tomb of the ruler Pakal the Great, discovered inside the Temple of the Inscriptions.

What to Expect

Walking through the site, you'll encounter the Temple of the Inscriptions, the Palace with its distinctive tower, and the Temple of the Cross Group — all set against a backdrop of towering ceiba trees and the sounds of howler monkeys. Only a fraction of the estimated 1,500 structures have been excavated; the rest remain hidden under the jungle canopy. The on-site museum displays stucco reliefs, jade artefacts, and a replica of Pakal's elaborate jade death mask.

Practical Tips

  • The site opens at 8am — arrive early for cooler temperatures and fewer visitors
  • The jungle setting means humidity is high — bring water and wear light clothing
  • Sturdy shoes are recommended for the uneven stone paths and stairs
  • Insect repellent is essential — mosquitoes are plentiful in the jungle
  • Allow 3–4 hours to explore the main site and museum
  • The town of Palenque is a short taxi ride away
