Huanglong National Scenic Reserve
About This Experience
Huanglong National Scenic Reserve is a UNESCO World Heritage site in northern Sichuan, famous for its thousands of terraced travertine pools that glow in shades of turquoise, jade, and gold. Set in a narrow valley at altitudes between 3,000 and 3,600 metres, the landscape resembles a golden dragon descending through a forested mountain gorge — hence the name Huanglong, meaning "Yellow Dragon."
What to Expect
A boardwalk trail winds uphill through the valley past increasingly spectacular formations. The highlight is the Five-Colour Pond (Wucai Chi) at the top — hundreds of vividly coloured pools reflecting the surrounding snow-capped peaks and forests. The cable car takes you to the upper section, from where you walk down past the best formations. The altitude is significant, so take your time and acclimatise.
Practical Tips
- Take the cable car up and walk down to avoid the steepest climb at altitude
- The site sits above 3,000 metres — altitude sickness is common; move slowly
- Portable oxygen cans are sold at the entrance and along the trail
- Best visited June to October when the pools are at their most colourful
- Often combined with a visit to Jiuzhaigou Valley as a multi-day trip from Songpan
