Highlight:Coming face-to-face with multiple Komodo dragons in the wild, including watching a baby dragon walk past us - an awe-inspiring encounter with the world's largest living lizards!

We set off from Labuan Bajo port for a two-day, one-night expedition through Komodo National Park - nestled between Flores and Sumbawa islands. This adventure would bring us face-to-face with legendary Komodo dragons, stunning marine life, and the otherworldly Pink Beach!

The Komodo Tour Package

Our tour would visit three iconic islands: Komodo Island, Rinca Island, and Padar Island. Both Komodo and Rinca are home to the famous Komodo Dragon (also known as the Komodo Monitor, but "Komodo Dragon" is way cooler!).

This expedition was our golden ticket to encounter the world's largest living lizard, along with stunning arrays of corals, tropical fish, seabirds, and sea turtles flourishing near these volcanic islands. We were beyond excited to hunt down these legendary prehistoric creatures!

The Budget Boat Experience

The local wooden boat was old and rusty - typical for budget tours unless you pay significantly more. Our basic vessel featured:

  • ❌ No cabins
  • ❌ No shower
  • ✅ One "clean" Western toilet
  • ✅ Tea, coffee, and ice-cold water
  • ✅ Simple but delicious meals

We'd been warned to stock up on beer, soft drinks, and snacks before departure. The crew consisted of a captain and a deckhand who spoke no English but were constantly smiling and courteous. They weren't the entertaining type, but we didn't mind - the three Spanish companions we'd teamed up with turned out to be great guys, and the atmosphere on board was light and friendly.

Day 1: Rinca Island - Dragons Galore!

Approaching Rinca Island with its volcanic hills and dragon-inhabited landscape

After sailing through beautiful scenery and soaking up fresh sea air from the bow, we arrived at Rinca Island. Being January (low season), only five boats were anchored - come July or August, and you'll share the island with 10 times more visitors!

More Dragons Than Komodo Island!

We learned that Rinca Island, often overlooked by tourists focusing on Komodo Island, actually has more Komodo dragons! (Maybe they should swap the names?) The island's landscape makes it an excellent place to spot the lizards in their natural habitat.

As we bought our entrance tickets, we spotted five Komodo dragons lounging near the ranger office, attracted by the smell of food. The rangers assured us they were never fed - it's crucial to maintain their killer instincts.

Dangerous Neighbors

The giant lizards aren't the only deadly creatures living on these islands. Cobras, Russell's Pit Vipers, and Green Tree Vipers are equally dangerous. Venturing alone is strictly forbidden, so we hired a mandatory ranger guide.

The Trek

We chose the medium 90-minute trek through shaded forest - offering the best chances to see these cold-blooded killers sheltering from the heat. The trail was flat and smooth as we wandered the bush searching for beasts.

Dragons are solitary, coming together only to eat or breed. One by one, we encountered several Komodo dragons including:

  • A baby dragon that our guide allowed to approach us
  • A female protecting her nest
  • Multiple adult dragons basking and hunting

Slowly, in silence, the baby dragon walked past us. Happiness, fear, and awe - all feelings mixed together in that unforgettable moment.

Day 1 Afternoon: Komodo Island

After our morning trek, we embarked for a quick lunch and nap on the longboat as we cruised to Komodo Island. Once there, we spotted even more dragons up close!

Our ranger, armed only with a forked stick (which didn't seem like enough protection!), kept watch over us. We remained cautious about our safety throughout the trek.

Along the way, we also encountered:

  • Crab-eating macaques
  • Water buffalo
  • Rusa deer

All of these animals are on the menu for the world's largest living lizard!

Pink Beach - Snorkeling Paradise

Pink Beach with its unique rose-colored sand and crystal-clear turquoise waters perfect for snorkeling

After sweating through both treks, we were thrilled to reach Pink Beach (Pantai Merah). When we swam ashore, the sand was indeed pinkish - colored by crushed red coral mixed with white sand!

The reef was a snorkeling paradise. Since all fishing activities are banned in the national park, marine life is abundant and vibrant. We spotted:

  • A huge sea turtle that we followed for 15 minutes
  • Countless colorful tropical fish
  • Stunning bright corals in every direction

The underwater world rivaled the terrestrial dragon encounters for sheer wonder!

Night on the Deck

After leaving the unusual pink beach, we returned to the boat for dinner. Post-meal, the crew set up mattresses on the open deck for sleeping under the stars.

The night was peaceful and quiet. In the distance, we could hear a party boat blasting music (must have been unbearable for boats moored nearby!). Our wise captain had anchored further down the beach for tranquility.

We fell asleep in the only place in the world where you can see Komodo dragons in the wild - a magical thought to drift off to.
