About This Experience

The Cu Chi Tunnels are a vast network of underground passages that played a crucial role during the Vietnam War. Built over decades beginning in the late 1940s, the tunnels eventually stretched over 250 kilometres and served as living quarters, supply routes, hospitals, and command centres for Viet Cong fighters. Today, two sections — Ben Dinh and Ben Duoc — are preserved and open to visitors.

What to Expect

Guided tours take you through widened sections of the original tunnels, where you can crawl through the narrow passages and see reconstructed underground rooms. Above ground, displays show the ingenious trap systems, camouflaged entrances, and ventilation shafts that kept the tunnels hidden. The experience is both sobering and fascinating, offering a ground-level perspective on the war's history.

Practical Tips

  • The tunnels are narrow and claustrophobic — not suitable for everyone
  • Wear comfortable clothes and closed shoes — the tunnels are dark and damp
  • Most visitors arrive on half-day tours from Ho Chi Minh City (about 1.5 hours drive)
  • Ben Duoc is less crowded than Ben Dinh and has longer tunnel sections
  • Bring water — the area is hot and humid year-round
