About This Experience

The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is widely regarded as New Zealand's greatest day walk. This 19.4 km one-way trek takes you through the heart of Tongariro National Park, a UNESCO dual World Heritage site, passing active volcanic craters, steaming vents, the stunning Emerald Lakes, and the barren landscape that served as Mordor in the Lord of the Rings films.

What to Expect

Starting from Mangatepopo, the trail climbs steadily to the South Crater before the steep ascent to Red Crater — the highest point at 1,886 metres. From there, the views down to the vivid turquoise Emerald Lakes are breathtaking. The descent through tussock and native bush leads to the Ketetahi car park.

Practical Tips

  • Start early (around 6–7 am) to avoid crowds and afternoon weather changes
  • Arrange shuttle transport — it's a one-way hike
  • Weather can change rapidly — bring windproof layers, rain gear, and sun protection
  • Carry at least 2 litres of water and plenty of food
  • The crossing is closed in dangerous conditions — check DOC alerts before setting out
