About This Experience
The Tian Tan Buddha, commonly known as the Big Buddha, sits atop a hill on Lantau Island at Ngong Ping. Standing 34 metres tall and weighing over 250 tonnes, it is one of the largest seated outdoor bronze Buddha statues in the world. Below it, the Po Lin Monastery has been an important Buddhist centre since 1906.
What to Expect
The Ngong Ping 360 cable car offers a spectacular 25-minute ride from Tung Chung across Lantau's mountainous landscape to the plateau. From there, 268 steps lead up to the base of the Buddha, where panoramic views stretch across the South China Sea. The Po Lin Monastery below houses ornate halls, incense-filled courtyards, and a renowned vegetarian restaurant.
Practical Tips
- The Ngong Ping 360 cable car is the most scenic way up — book the crystal cabin for glass-floor views
- Climbing the 268 steps to the Buddha is the only way up — wear comfortable shoes
- The monastery's vegetarian lunch is excellent and included with some ticket options
- Visit on a clear day for the best views from the summit
- Nearby Tai O fishing village makes a great combined day trip
