About This Experience
The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding is China's foremost centre for panda conservation. Set in lush bamboo groves on the northern outskirts of Chengdu, the base is home to over 200 giant pandas and red pandas in spacious, naturalistic enclosures. It is one of the best places in the world to observe these iconic animals.
What to Expect
The base spreads across landscaped grounds with winding paths through bamboo forests. You'll see giant pandas of all ages — from playful cubs in the nursery to adults lazily munching bamboo. The red panda enclosures are equally charming. The earlier you arrive, the more active the pandas are, especially during their morning feeding sessions.
Practical Tips
- Arrive as early as possible — pandas are most active in the morning
- The nursery with baby pandas is the most popular area, visit it first
- Avoid weekends and Chinese holidays for smaller crowds
- Comfortable walking shoes are essential — the grounds are extensive
- A shuttle bus runs around the park if you prefer not to walk the full circuit
