About This Experience

The Forbidden City is the world's largest palace complex, spanning 72 hectares in the centre of Beijing. For nearly 500 years, it served as the imperial residence for 24 emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties. With 980 surviving buildings and close to 9,000 rooms, it is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of China's most visited landmarks.

What to Expect

Enter through the Meridian Gate on the south side and walk northward through a succession of grand halls, courtyards, and gardens. The Hall of Supreme Harmony, the largest wooden structure in the complex, is the centrepiece. Beyond the ceremonial halls, the inner court reveals a more intimate side of imperial life with private quarters, gardens, and treasure galleries displaying jade, porcelain, and calligraphy.

Practical Tips

• Enter from the south (Tian'anmen Gate side) and exit north — it is a one-way route
• Book tickets in advance online, especially during national holidays
• Bring your passport — it is required for entry
• Allow at least three hours to explore the main route
• Audio guides are available in multiple languages at the entrance
